Last week we took a nice walk in downtown to visit some of the historical buildings of Chicago. It was very exciting to know the details about all these original buildings, which are part of my daily life. We visited the amazing Chicago Theater, and it took me back to the nightlife of Chicago in the 1820's. Looking at its big window built like the Arc de Triumph we can imagine the effort of this new society, trying to bring some elements from Europe, the old civilization. It was interesting to know that they used this theater to experience the first television. Macy's or Marshall Fields, the second largest department store in the world, it shows how far capitalism had gone by that time. Macy's is very sumptuous with big clocks in each corner of the building like a British palace. Carbide and Carbone Building is another proof of extravagance of the Chicago architecture. The architects got the inspiration from a bottle of champaign, so the building is green on the body and gold on the top. I couldn't
believe when I saw a big bottle of champaign in the middle of downtown!
The Cultural Center was the first Public Library after the big fire of Chicago, and it has a similar design of Art Institute building because the same group of architects built them. Both of them were built to stimulate culture and education during the process of rebuilding the city of Chicago. One more remarkable building that I visited was The London Guarantee Building with a little temple on the top, and the facade with a curve that follows the river. It is a fascinating building that matches architecture with nature.
