This I Believe

Sandra Oviedo-Lara
International student in U.S.
With the faith to be a photographer.
24 years old.
Mexican.

I believe in being free. I believe in the power of decision. I believe that homosexuality is a free choice. I believe that love and attraction does not have gender. I believe in evolution and not being sure about anything else but the present. I believe that I am going to reap just what I sow.

Every single day we are making choices. Sometimes it is hard to make the right one, because we do not know it. Sometimes I think with my brain but some tells me that I should feel with my heart. However, we just have to do it. When I think of my freedom of decision, occasionally I get scared because that is a huge responsibility. I ask myself: Why do I have to make a decision? Thus, if I choose the wrong one, I am going to feel repentant about it. That is the game of life: Choices.

I have learned that life is a serious thing and nothing looks easy. I remember when my mother asked me if I was weird. And I asked her back: What is weird? She told me: “You are normal, you do not have to act like weird people”. I could not shut up my heart and I broke hers. She did not understand what I was telling her. She slapped my face. After three years, I know that she still loves me but she will never forgive me. I understand her feelings, I really do. I am her baby. I believe that she thinks I am going to change. I just know that I made a true decision.

Bisexual, heterosexual, or homosexual are social concepts that do not have to shape the individuals sexual behavior, but often does. Finally, in terms of sexual orientation and choice, a conscientious respect between gay, straight, bi and other people would help us develop an integral inclusive society. I believe in me and I believe in you.
